ARCS Sample Environment

Overview

Many Sample environments are available for ARCS, Magnets, Cryostats, Furnaces and more. Details are provided on the sample environment website

Arcs can handle sample environement up to 1 m in diamater.

Oscillating Radial Collimator

Inside the sample chamber there is an oscillating radial collimator on a vertical translation table. The oscillation is 1.6 o in a period of 21s. Details of the Collimator are provided in: M. B. Stone et al. Rev. Sci. Instrum. 85, 085101 (2014) For Sample environments that have several heat shields, this can significantly reduce the background. However for experiments using very low background sample environment this is not necessary and can be lowered out of the beam. For the largest Sample environment the Radial Collimator can not be used.

CCR 16

This is a top loading Closed Cycle Refrigerator with relatively low background. The in sample chamber shielding needs to be in the off center position. The radial collimator is usually used for this device. There are two stick options for this device a low temperature stick which can go from 5 to 300 K and a High temperature stick that can go from 20K to 700K More information on this device can be found on the Sample environment CCR-016 webpage

CCR 12

This is the lowest background Closed Cycle Refrigerator. Samples are loaded from the bottom. Usually only a thin Al foil heat shield is between the sample and the detectors for this device. This device can be used above room temperature by installing the Hot stage. This device adds an additional 1.75” between the mounting position and the center of the beam and provides a maximum temperature of 450 K. The sample chamber shielding needs to be in the center position. Micas

The sample chamber shielding needs to be in the center position The radial collimator is usually used for this device. For more information on the Micas furnace, see the sample environment HOT-010 wepbage

Mag-001

This 5 T vertical field magnet can be used with the radial collimator For more information on this magnet, see the Sample environment MAG-001 webpage

MAG-005

This 8T vertical field magnet is used without the radial collimator. For more information, see the Sample environment MAG-005

Room Temperature stick

This stick mounts on a 16 inch flange and provides a simple way of putting as sample in the beam. The height of the flange to the beam center is 29.5 in.
